چکیده

We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting eg electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund’s exchange coupling JH and by the crystal field orbital splitting Ez in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.

Quantum phases of the Shraiman-Siggia model.

We examine phases of the Shraiman-Siggia model of lightly-doped, square lattice quantum antiferromagnets in a self-consistent, two-loop, interacting magnon analysis. We find magnetically-ordered and quantum-disordered phases both with and without incommensurate spin correlations. The quantum disordered phases have a pseudo-gap in the spin excitation spectrum. The quantum transition between the ...

Spin, Orbital, and Spin-Orbital Polarons in Transition Metal Oxides

I give a brief overview of a polaron formation in three distinct transition metal oxides: (i) spin polaron when a hole is added to the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered plane in La2CuO4, (ii) orbital polaron when a hole is added to the alternating orbital (AO) ordered plane in LaMnO3, and (iii) spin-orbital polaron when a hole is added to the AF and AO ordered plane in LaVO3. Comparison of the dis...

Dimerization and Entanglement in Spin-Orbital Chains

Spin-orbital coupling: The study of orbital degeneracy in transition metal oxides is motivated, e.g., by the large variety of spin-charge-orbital ordered phases, the possible control of the orbital degree of freedom at interfaces and heterostructures, the switching from orbital ordered to metallic phases in applied magnetic fields, and the colossal magnetoresistance. The rather complex interpla...

Massive symmetry breaking in LaAlO3/SrTiO3(111) quantum wells: a three-orbital strongly correlated generalization of graphene.

Density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term reveal competing ground states in (111)-oriented (LaAlO(3))(M)/(SrTiO(3))(N) superlattices with n-type interfaces, ranging from spin, orbitally polarized (with selective e(g)('), a(1g), or d(xy) occupation), Dirac point Fermi surface, to charge-ordered flat band phases. These phases are steered by the interplay of (i)...

Bond- versus site-centred ordering and possible ferroelectricity in manganites.

Transition metal oxides with a perovskite-type structure constitute a large group of compounds with interesting properties. Among them are materials such as the prototypical ferroelectric system BaTiO(3), colossal magnetoresistance manganites and the high-T(c) superconductors. Hundreds of these compounds are magnetic, and hundreds of others are ferroelectric, but these properties very seldom co...
